Anticoagulation Foundation for All Clinical Staff

Aim of the Session:

To enable the autonomous practice in anticoagulant monitoring in primary care. This will cover mainly warfarin management with INR monitoring but will also cover DOAC monitoring.

Staff group:
GPs, Nurses, HCAs and all clinical staff

Learning Outcomes:

By attending the programme individuals will:

  • Understand and demonstrate a satisfactory theoretical knowledge base for safe anticoagulation management.
  • Be confident in practical near patient testing techniques for INR measurement. This will be demonstrated by zoom as they well be no practical session due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, if new clinical personnel do need practical sessions this can be arranged at the Practice.
  • Be competent in use of computer software systems to assist in dosing and management of warfarin patients.
  • Be able to safely assess and initiate new patients onto warfarin and DOACs and manage the monitoring.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of the multi-professional, disciplinary team in managing anticoagulation safely.
  • Acquire an understanding of the requirements of clinical governance for anticoagulation management developing/adapting and applying audit tools with performance indicators.
  • The course will also provide discuss self-testing and have case scenarios for discussion with adequate time to reinforce learning.
