Course: Immunisation Foundation Course for HCSWs 

In line with the Public Health England National Minimum Training Standards

The National Standards for HCA’s and Assistant practitioners (2015) Please click to read. This document addresses the minimum standards of training for HCSWs for the delivery of Influenza (via the IM route to adults ONLY), Shingles (both Zostavax and Shingrix vaccinations) and Pneumococcal (PPV23) vaccinations to adults, and intranasal influenza vaccine to children only.

Supervision: HCSWs involved in immunisation services must have an identified supervisor and ongoing supervision by a registered, appropriately trained, experienced and knowledgeable practitioner in immunisation.

Course aim: The course is packaged to equip all our HCSWs workforce with the knowledge and skills required to deliver the immunisations programmes covered by the national training standards for HCSWs.

2 day - You must attend both days to complete the course.

Course Summary:

  • The aims of the current influenza, shingles and pneumococcal vaccine policy
  • Immunology
  • Epidemiology - Flu, Shingles and pneumococcal vaccination programme
  • Current issues relating to influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccines
  • Communication with patients and parents
  • National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training of Healthcare Support Workers
  • Legal issues including consent and use of appropriate legal frameworks for HCSWs
  • Storage and handling of vaccines
  • Correct administration of vaccines
  • Anaphylaxis, basic life support and adverse reactions
  • Documentation, record keeping and reporting
  • Strategies for the effective organisation of vaccination sessions – the role of the prescriber and understanding the delegation process
  • The role of the HCSW as an immuniser (to include: role limitations, the role of others in immunisation)
  • Support for the HCSWs eg supervision, mentorship and reflection
  • Immunisation Quiz
