Managing Palliative Care Emergencies

Aim of session:

The aim of this face to face course is to identify the emergency situations listed below that may occur at the end of life, how these can be managed and the effect that they may have on the patient, family and yourself.

This course is aimed at healthcare professionals caring for people who are approaching or at the end of their lives

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the risk of potential palliative care emergencies based on the patient’s history
  • Examine the causes, treatment and management of the following conditions:
  •  - Malignant spinal cord compression (MSCC)
  •  - Superior vena cava obstruction (SVCO)
  •  - Neutropenic sepsis
  •  - Hypercalcaemia
  •  - Bleeding
  • Assess the risks versus benefits of treatment, including the patient’s and family’s wishes
  • Explore the availability of appropriate interventions in your practice area
  • Discuss and reflect on the effect that such conditions may have on the patient, family and you personally
