Empower your workforce with Managing Important Conversations training – tailored courses for all levels of staff in health and social care.
Equipping staff with the skills to manage important conversations is vital in today’s emotionally complex health and social care settings. The tiered Managing Important Conversations programme – spanning Foundation, Intermediate, and Advanced levels – offers evidence-based communication skills training tailored to the varied needs of clinical and non-clinical professionals.
At Foundation Level, the SAGE & THYME® model provides staff and volunteers with a memorable and structured approach to supporting individuals in distress. Participants will learn how to recognise psychological distress, avoid causing harm, and provide compassionate, person-centred communication – essential skills for anyone engaging with patients, carers, or service users.
The Intermediate Level course, developed by Princess Alice Hospice, builds on foundational skills, helping health and social care professionals navigate emotionally charged conversations. Staff will learn how to prepare effectively, stay focused on the other person’s agenda, respond empathetically, and close conversations with clarity and kindness – all of which strengthen patient relationships and improve team dynamics.
At the Advanced Level, experienced professionals such as GPs, specialist nurses, and social workers are supported in refining their approach to highly sensitive dialogues, including breaking bad news. Through reflective practice, role-play, and advanced listening techniques, participants enhance their confidence and competence in delivering difficult messages with empathy and integrity.
