Basic Wound Care for HCAs

Aim of the Session:

This 2 hour virtual classroom focuses on the understanding the management of acute wounds that may present in the clinical environment including simple burns, surgical wounds and tissue viability.

Duration:
2 hours

Staff group:
HCAs either new to or with some experience of basic wound care

Session Objectives:

  • To learn the anatomy and physiology of the skin
  • To understand the management of acute wounds that may present in the clinical environment to include simple burns, surgical wounds
  • How to identify an infected wound and the actions to take
  • To understand policies and procedures that support the carer in clinical practice to include accountability
  • To understand and demonstrate practice the role of sutures in wound closure and how to remove clips and sutures
  • To discuss the types of wounds and the wound healing process
  • Good skin care and the use of emollients
  • Infection Control

Delivery and delegate interactivity:

  • Session will be delivered virtually with facilitator led discussion on the cycle of communication with example discussion to identify common assumptions and errors.
  • Delegates will interact using chat box, sharing thoughts opinions and personal experiences.
  • Delegates will be encouraged to use self-reflection and individual action planning-the focusing of future changes.

Following the session delegates will be able:

  • To assess the skin using TIMERS assessment method
  • To identify wound infection and take appropriate action
  • To recognise different types of dressings and their role in wound care healing
  • To follow infection control guidance for wound care
