Diabetes LCS

Target Audience: 

Registered clinicians eg GPs, nurses, dietitians

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Make a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s risk of type 2 diabetes utilising a valid diabetes risk assessment tool.
  • Identify individuals at risk of type 2 diabetes (e.g. long-term use of steroid and antipsychotic medication, previous gestational diabetes) and initiate appropriate screening/diagnostic tests.  
  • Provide advice to people at risk of type 2 diabetes regarding lifestyle changes, including exercise programmes and dietary changes for the prevention of type 2 diabetes. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the available tests for the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and understand the results and monitoring requirements.
  • Identify those in need of pancreatic cancer screening and appropriate referral into urgent investigation service.
  • Understand and be able to explain the diabetes diagnosis including symptoms to patients.
  • Understand the micro and macrovascular complications of diabetes and how to support patients to prevent or manage these. This includes annual screening reviews and completion of the 8 care processes, promotion of good oral health, and appropriate signposting and referrals to services such as: psychological support services, structured education such as DESMOND or similar, exercise support services, dietetics services for weight management and referral to national programmes such as NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP) and Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme.
  • An understanding of the management of pregnancy and diabetes and the importance of pre-conception planning and care.
  • An understanding of the dietary management of diabetes.
  • An understanding of the pharmacological management of diabetes including insulin and other injectable medication.
