Defining Diabetes and Prevalence

Diabetes is a chronic health condition characterized by hyperglycaemia due to the lack of insulin or the body’s inability to insulin. The high blood sugars, if left untreated can lead to several complications. There are two main kinds of Diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. The other kinds are Gestational Diabetes, MODY and LADA. Diabetes can be steroid induced, secondary to endocrinopathies and pancreatic problems. Type 2 diabetes accounts for around 90% and rarer forms of diabetes are 2%.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes mellitus consists of an array of dysfunctions resulting from the combination of resistance to insulin action, inadequate insulin secretion, and excessive or inappropriate glucagon secretion

Prevalence

  • The prevalence of Diabetes is 7.1% in England, 6.2 % in East Surrey, 5% in Guildford & Waverley, 5.5% in Surrey Downs & 6.3% in North West Surrey
  • The estimated prevalence of undiagnosed & diagnosed Diabetes is 8.5% in England, 7.6% in East Surrey, 7.1% in Guildford & Waverley, 7.7% in Surrey Downs in & 7.7% in North West Surrey
  • 9 million in the UK are living with Diabetes and 850,000 remain undiagnosed.
  • Estimated prevalence of people with increased risk of diabetes is 11.4% in England, 11.1% in East Surrey, 11% in Guildford & Waverley, 11.9% in Surrey Downs & 11.2 in North West Surrey
  • By 2030, 5.5 million people in the UK are likely to develop Diabetes.
